If the climate is dry, then the wood will expel the moisture it is holding. All this helps wood to reach an equilibrium…. But wait! My guitar is lacquer finished…. Obviously acoustic guitars with their open sound-hole bodies are more sensitive to the moisture in the air than your electric, but despite what you think, this process of taking on and expelling moisture goes on all the time although I will admit that when an electric guitar is highly finished with multiple coats, the process takes longer.
We used to have 4 distinct seasons during the year, but with climate change etc, that has become more or less, two seasons. The two seasons provide a complete degree turnaround as far as relative humidity is concerned…..
If you translate that to your guitars, you have a half year where the instrument is absorbing moisture and half a year where your instrument is expelling moisture. This seems fine except that when the instrument absorbs moisture, it swells and grows. Obviously the opposite is true, as the instrument expels moisture, the wood shrinks.
There are many other conditions that are a direct result from instruments not being properly humidified…. So what is the solution? Take a look through the Solo website, you will find several products to help you. What you are doing now, is providing a year-round humidity controlled environment for your instrument which allows the wood to maintain a constant moisture content and prevents the growing-swelling-shrinking that occurs during the changes of the season.

And while too little is usally the big problem too much can cause problems also. Taylor has a tech sheet on low humidity I'd guess both are bad. Once the heat is turned off for the season, I do not need to humidify.
