Styles of Frye Boots Frye offers many styles of short and long boots, including pull-on, zip up and lace-up boots. Here are some of the more popular styles and a few of their individual size features: Harness Boots: These pull-on boots have a inch or 8-inch shaft, a inch opening and are available in medium and wide fittings. There is also a harness boot with a back zip and an 8-inch shaft. Frye has several styles of this pull-on boot with elasticated panels.
The ankle level shaft is ideal for wearing under jeans or suit pants. Engineer boots : This is another pull-on boot with a longer shaft, at 10 inches. The consensus is that these boots have a lot of room at the instep, perfect if yours is high. If not, insoles can fill the gap. Western Boots : Western-style boots are another popular choice. These from Frye come in different colors and leathers and have a inch shaft with a Lace-Up Boots: Frye has many ankle height lace-up boots, such as the Tyler model for men and the Sabrina model for women.
Both come in a range of sizes and colors, with a medium width fitting. Frye Size Chart Frye has some sizing guidance on their customer care page. The shaft has not collapsed, and they hold their shape well. I bought mine a half size smaller than my usual size. At the time, this seemed obvious, since they are long in the toe. Since wearing them around a lot, I am not sure I did the right thing, as they can pinch a bit after about 6 or 7 hours of walking around.
The leather looks essentially brand new, and the soles are doing fine. The sales girls in the juniors section of my regular department store compliment me - you know that's gotta mean something - and my daughter stopped telling me that I dress like a hobo.
I hope that I will last as well as these boots. Anonymous, Zappos Customer , February 26, Footwear Hall Of Fame Entry - This city chicken recently acquired these boots after finding them in a most unexpected venue. I was so excited that I literally wore them out of the store. I work in a very upscale, fashion-aware enviroment, no stranger to the fashions heirarchy, and these have held their own with many, many compliments and inquiries.
In a word, people are jealous! I own one other pair of Fryes, a black lace-up. After fifteen years of hard use, they're still roadworthy and, believe it or not, still garner the compliments. These are amazing boots. From the beginning, they were an all day wear. Frye deserves complete respect and admiration for continuing to produce a product that has upheld quality, durability and desirability.
The weathered brown color is completely wonderful and authentic in all ways. The construction is amazing and comfortable. They have a western edge, but in a subtle and fashion forward sense. These boots leave no doubt that they could go through hell and high water! They have my vote for inclusion into the fashion hall of fame. Ralph Laurens' stylists use lots of Frye products for their shoots and runways. Anonymous, Zappos Customer , April 18, Overall 2 Rated 2 stars out of 5. Comfort 1 Rated 1 stars out of 5.
I bought these because all the online reviews said they were so comfortable. Well, I have had them for a year now and I want to cry every single time I wear them. I wore them everywhere almost every day for the first 3 months I had them and then sporadically thereafter. I made the mistake of trying to break them in the very first time when I went to Vegas.
Obviously, that was a disaster. The leather at the ankles creases in a bad spot and pushes against my ankles. Even with a thick piece of molefoam and rolled up socks shoved between my ankle and the boot, they are still terribly uncomfortable. I even had a boot store stretch them for me for a week and no dice. I talked to a friend who also had these and she said the exact same thing. She doesn't even bother trying to wear them anymore.
I have no idea why anyone would say these are at all comfortable and why nobody's reviews say anything about this pain. Maybe I just have a faulty pair of boots, or weird ankles. There's absolutely no padding on the bottoms either, so regardless of the ankle situation it feels like you're walking on wood.
Do yourself a favor and don't buy them until you try them on in the store at the very least. If you choose to buy these, you should get a half size smaller. I normally wear a size 7 and I bought a 6. Your heels will always slip out no matter what size you buy. That's just the design of the slip-on boot. They are pretty heavy, but they will never fall off. The calf openings are larger so if you have skinny chicken legs like I do then the boots stick out a bit, but they still look great.
Harriet A, Zappos Customer , November 30, I bought these in They are the next best thing to house slippers, literally. SO comfortable. Your boots and feet will thank you! Anonymous, Zappos Customer , May 4, This is my first pair of Frye boots and I love them! I have always purchased Lucchese boots in the past but thought I would try something different this time and I'm so glad that I did. It took me several tries to get the style and color right though.
I started with the Belted Harness boots which the color, Distressed Chestnut is my favorite and is exactly like the color in the pictures but they looked too bulky around the 'belted harness' area and too loose at the calves.
Then I went with the Belted Harness, which is the style I originally liked anyway. First I ordered the color Old Smoke Town, which is a very dark, espresso brown and decided that was too dark for me. Then I ordered the Belted Harness in Tan, which I really liked but they were darker than the pictures portrayed.
Just be warned that this color is much darker than they actually are just a tad lighter than Tan - makes me sad because I liked the Dark Brown Crazy Horse color in the pictures better , but I love the style, so they are keepers!
I have to work to get them on and off though - no biggie as I'm sure they will loosen up with wear. They fit nicely at the calf area with a little extra room for jeans my calves are regular to small size. I'm 5'6" and the height hits just at mid-calf. One reason I chose this style over other Frye's is because of the sole. Instead of leather, that is originally slick and wears fairly quickly I know you can get the sole replaced but Overall great boots!
Very pleased with my purchase or investment! Oh, and this was my first purchase from Zappos and it will not be my last! The free shipping both ways is so nice especially when you need to order several pairs before you get it right! Carrie, Zappos Customer , September 29, I have had completely ridiculously poor experiences shopping from another well-known shoe website, and decided to try Zappos again.
I am blown away by the customer service and the genuine efforts of the team to ensure I had a good shopping experience and was shipped a solid, quality product. Frye products are legendary, but I do not think that gives them an excuse to rest on their laurels.
They need better quality control. That being said, four pairs of boots later, I have a lovely, comfortable, perfectly patinaed pair of harness boots. They absolutely run half a size too large, but once you find the right pair, you will want to live in them! Thank you! Molly, Zappos Customer , June 22, In this situation, I'll recommend the larger size and a pair of good merino wool socks.
I did this for my Chippewa boots when they didn't stretch out on their own like my Fryes. Stop being in denial about your shoe size! The pressure on my big toe broke my toenail.
Go with the 10s! Fryes do not really stretch much. They get broken in, sure, but the leather is thick and tough and does not have a lot of give.
I'm basing this on owning 4 different pairs of Fryes. If the 9. It's not something you really notice until you've been walking around a couple hours and it's not something that will get better with Fryes, not even with leather stretcher. If the 10s basically fit now though, they will stay that way. My experience with Frye's is that they don't stretch out when you break them in, so you're really best off getting the size that is as comfortable as possible from the start.
Aside: I took my fryes to a cobbler and they could not stretch the toe box because it's rigid plastic. So don't count on that. I have these exact boots and trust me, you want the larger size! Mine are six years old and have barely stretched at all. I took them to the cobbler last fall to get them stretched because my feet have gotten wider with age, but he said there wasn't much he could do because the leather is so thick and sturdy.
I currently have a pair of Vasque Sundowners hiking boots in 8. The 8W probably would have been the optimal size, but they were out of the 8. However, I also have a pair of thick, cushy insoles. When I wear my thin dual-layer walking socks, I replace the insoles the boots came with with the thick, cushy insoles, and the boots fit just fine. When I wear my thick, fluffy hiking socks I switch back to the original insoles supplemented with a pair of very, very thin insoles intended to adjust the fit of shoes and the boots fit just fine.
So I recommend the larger boots and investing in insoles to adjust the fit. I cannot help you with where to get them, as my insoles all came with other pairs of shoes I've bought in the last couple of years. We're going on a 3-week vacation this winter, most days of which we'll be walking around for hours, and my feet are arthritic and wide, with bonus bone spurs, so I've been through a LOT of different shoes, socks, and insoles in the past two months, trying to find a solution that will keep me walking.
I own the same boots. I agree that they have not stretched over time.
